Clearing the big smoke
Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, UK, has launched an action plan to reduce carbon emissions in the city, aiming to cut carbon emissions by 60% below 1990 levels by 2025. The Climate Change Action Plan, Action Today to Protect Tomorrow sets out the measures planned to cut emissions. Mark Watts, senior advisor to the Mayor on climate change, explains the action plan. He says that the population of cities generally has a lower carbon footprint than in smaller urban areas as more people travel by public transport. Climate change is a major priority for the political leadership in London. Watts discusses the issues associated with the growth in flights from airports in London, carbon emissions from the commercial and public sector, and measures for reducing domestic energy use.
