A2/A282 decongestant

This article describes bridge construction as part of a project in the UK to construct extra road links at the intersection of the A2 and A282 major roads in Kent, south-east England. The roads are to be widened and direct connector roads built to carry traffic from one road to the other, bypassing the roundabout at the junction. The bridge structures needed are required to be low-maintenance and not to need repainting, so the decision was taken to use weathered steel, where a water-resistant rust patina is deliberately built up. The middle section of the longest bridge is being built first as the outer sections require pier construction around the existing roads. The concrete formed piers have differing numbers of columns depending on aesthetics and cost. The contractor has worked out seven optimum positions for one crane to lift all the bridge decks into place. Two smaller bridges are also under construction, with the smallest one to be built in May 2007.
