Continual efforts to achieve results
This article describes current and planned developments on the Croatian railway network. Modernisation is being planned to prepare for Croatia becoming a member state of the European Union. The railways have been restructured into four sections: passenger transport, cargo, train traction and infrastructure. Staff reductions and redeployment will be necessary. An infrastructure project will include construction of new lines, reconstruction of existing ones, and remote train control installation. This project will also concern revitalisation of ports and improved suburban freight services. Joining the European Union will mean competition from other countries' operators. Track maintenance causes delays and line closures, and makes the routes uncompetitive with those through neighbouring countries. Co-operation is being investigated with Slovenian Railways to use trains carrying lorries: alliances between countries are seen as the way forward.
