Detection of Driver Gaze Direction and Considerations on its Application to Glance Away Detection using Image Processing

In order to design and develop driver support systems that are user friendly, it is important to be able to detect driver states (dozing, glancing away, etc.). In this paper, the development of a technique to detect driver gaze direction during driving is described, accomplished by time-varying image processing. Using this method to detect the gaze direction, the facial direction and eye direction can be separately detected. Verification experiments proved that the developed method is applicable to glance away detection. Furthermore, verification experiments concerning glance away behavior were conducted using a driving simulator. Some information effective for system development was also obtained.
