Analysis of the Optimum Configuration of Roadside Units and Onboard Units in Dedicated Short-Range Communication Systems

This paper presents of means of optimization for dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) on-board units (OBUs) and roadside units (RSUs) using uplink signal strength as a measure for electronic toll collection (ETC) applications. As it is important that information is relayed from OBUs to RSUs, their arrangement in terms of mounting angles and mounting height should be carefully determined. It is also important to note the power shielding effects of windshields. The optimized configuration is found with a lower RSU mounting height, which is problematic for those trucks that are more than 5.5 meters above the ground. For mounting angles of both RSU and OBU, researchers recommend larger mounting angles in excess of 45 degrees in order to maintain high signal strength.
