Car Free in America
The author of this article outlines a variety of ways Americans can leave their cars and use alternative, sustainable types of transportation. He reports that 14 million Americans are riding public transportation each weekday, and light rail had the highest percentage of growth of all modes of transportation. More than 60 American cities have or plan to build light-rail systems. Long-distance trains are working their way back into American life beginning with Amtrak’s Acela train. Biking has gained in popularity, and the electric-assisted bicycles offer help for those who can’t pedal all the way on their own. Still, the Europeans and South Americans have taken the lead in getting people out of their cars, with car-free zones, car-free days, and congestion pricing.
