Aseismatic Reinforcement of Viaduct Foundations

In this article the authors present a method for aseismatic, or earthquake resistant reinforcement design for viaduct foundations based on soil resistance and concrete surface reinforcements, or foundation slabs. Such improvements are desired in light of damage caused by the Mid Niigata Prefecture Earthquake. Tests were conducted using the method that applied centrifugal loading to a downsized model of the viaduct. The hypothesis that led to this concept was that, upon analysis of seismic damage to viaduct columns, horizontal displacement of the columns would become shorter due to bounding by the surface surrounding the viaduct’s footing and columns. Upon verifying that this was the case and conducting testing on foundation slabs, researchers found that there was a strong correlation between strengthening foundation slabs and improved column displacement regarding seismic activity.
