Development and Future of Space Creation Technology

This article describes the overall planning, design, and building methodology used by the JR East Japanese rail company for both architectural and civil engineering technologies as headed under the concept of “space creation technology.” Four examples of this technology and correlated specificities are described: 1) the difficulty of railway design from architectural and civil engineering as opposed to other public works or private buildings; 2) issues related to ensuring functional improvement alongside satisfaction; 3) seismic improvement using earthquake resistant reinforcements; and, 4) the in-house development of bridge technologies. These technologies are part of the 20 year development of rail technologies by the company, the history of which is recapitulated in brief. The article also discusses additional areas for improvement: converting stations into destinations, the social elements of stations, collaborative elements, and safety expectations.
