Austin's City Limits: Researchers Find Effective Construction Management Strategy in Bustling Texas Town

This article describes a successful traffic- and construction-management strategy for a 24-block stretch of roadway in Austin, Texas that became a case study in a research project titled “Traffic Management Studies for High Volume Roadways.” Lamar Boulevard is a major arterial that carries 40,000 vehicles a day and is home to a variety of businesses and residences. Public opinion on previous projects had been negative. The project manager for Lamar Boulevard worked closely with local merchants and residents, held potential contractors to very strict participation standards, relied on incentives and disincentives to encourage timely completion, and used construction methods designed to be flexible to accommodate major merchant events. Permanent lane closures for traffic control and management added to the success of the overall project.
