Road Science Illustrated: Perfect Asphalt Compaction

In a special pullout feature, "Road Science Illustrated," the proper method to achieve "perfect" asphalt compaction is described. Each aspect of the process is illustrated and annotated. The reasons that compaction is necessary are given. The elements of an asphalt delivery are also described, including the need to regulate speed so that the asphalt is not dumped so quickly that unwanted segregation of aggregate within the mix occurs, and the truck never bumps the paver to avoid jostling the mat and causing discontinuity. Techniques adapted to the needs of Superpave mixes are described, including the use of hybrid rollers, which pair rubber-tired compaction at one end with a standard steel vibratory drum at the other. Six steps, from "test strip" through "finish rolling," are illustrated.
