Getting Ready for Take Off

This article discusses Africa’s largest construction project, which is the expansion of Cairo Airport. Expected to soon reach its maximum capacity of nine million passengers, the airport is expanding its infrastructure not only to increase its passenger capacity to 21 million but to also be able to accommodate the Airbus A380. This $395 million project includes the construction of a new main terminal building, parking facilities, bridges linking existing terminals, and airside paving. The article focuses on some of the paving challenges facing the contractors. Work on the project is carried out 24 hours a day. Since temperatures between the daytime and nighttime vary so greatly, the concrete being used needs to be pre-cracked and filled with a rubber compound to avoid random cracking. The paving also needs to be coordinated with the installation of the electric cables for powering the ground lighting, signage, and airplane parking control systems. The project is expected to be complete in 30 months.
