Life-Cycle Costs Get Special Attention in Prague
At the International Wheelset Congress in Prague, special attention is being given to wheelset life-cycle costs (LCC) and maintenance. The author examines the subject, which as been linked to the drive for rail transportation that is safer and more efficient, and has been growing in importance in recent years. Rather than conventional experience-based methods, new methods are under development that are based on such things as improved diagnostics, computer modeling, and better knowledge of material characteristics. The author's descriptions include probability of detection (POD), wheel tire analysis, and efforts by various European nations.
