Booming Tourism, Regional Focus Boost Muscat
As Oman has become a more attractive tourist and investment destination, its airport, Seeb International in Muscat, is busily expanding. Passenger numbers surged 26 percent in 2006, and cargo grew 31 percent over the same time period. In this article, the author points out that much of last year’s growth was due to Gulf Air’s dual-hub strategy incorporating Bahrain and Muscat. That is changing as Oman plans to cut its financial ties with Gulf Air in favor of its own national carrier Oman Air. But even without Gulf Air, the airport is expected to expand, and is adding a second terminal as well as an additional parallel runway in order to increase capacity to 12 million passengers by 2010. Oman has become a prime tourist destination for Europeans who enjoy its weather during the winter and perceive it as being less spoiled than nearby Dubai.
