Design and Control of the Propulsion System of a Series Hybrid Electric Vehicle
In this paper, the authors present the design of a propulsion drive for a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). HEVs provide an opportunity to use new energy sources in road transportation, not only to minimize fuel consumption but also to reduce air pollution. The authors describe efforts that are being made to improve the HEV electrical subsystems, such as electric motors, power converters, electronic controllers, energy management units, batteries, and the integration and optimization of these systems. The authors present mathematical models of the subsystems for their proposed propulsion drive. They apply an optimized vector control strategy to the induction motor drive. They report on the simulation of this propulsion system in virtual test beds; several results are presented in different operation modes, including braking regeneration.
