Scan Tour Examines Warm-Mix in Europe
This article describes a two-week scan tour by American representatives to some of the oldest warm-mix asphalt (WMA) projects in Europe. Participants included representatives from National Asphalt Pavement Association, American Association of State Highway and Transportation officials, Federal Highway Administration, Asphalt Institute, as well as contractors and consultants. They visited projects as well as laboratories and plants in Norway, Germany, Belgium, and France. Participants viewed WMA sections of roadway constructed as long ago as 1999, and determined that WMA worked as well or better than Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). The scan team identified some 12 technologies with production temperatures as low as 194 degrees.
