Trafficmaster/RAC Foundation congestion report - volume 1 - avoiding the commuter jams
Twenty per cent of company car drivers in the UK spend more than five hours every week sitting in congestion. This represents wasted time, fuel and resources. Employees would welcome more flexible working practices and encouragement of home working. This document is intended to help business and drivers understand the behaviour of the road network and provide information to enable change. An indexed measure of key average journey times across the UK and a summary of UK congestion hotspots are used to assess the changing impact of congestion. The worst congestion hotspot was junctions 6a-11 of the M1 followed by junctions 9-20 of the M25. The majority of commuting occurs between 7.30 and 8.30 am and between 4.30 and 6.30 pm. Regional differences in peak commuter hours are outlined. 'Smart' practical alternative routes are given for a variety of peak time journeys.
