Quieter road surfaces

Two new 'silent' asphalt surfacings that last longer and reduce noise levels are being tested in Sweden. The first is Quiet Asphalt from Skanska. The Quiet Asphalt developed for Nordic conditions, where studded tyres are used, uses larger stones, increasing the durability of the surface and improving drainage. The development of Quiet Asphalt is outlined. The product is being tested on sites around Stockholm, Sweden. The second product is Viacoquiet from NCC. This comprises two layers of porous asphalt (void content of 20%) with a lower layer of 60mm thickness and an upper layer of 30mm. In the bottom layer there is a 22mm aggregate and in the upper layer 11mm due to the prevalence of studded tyres. A modified polymer binder is used. NCC has paved the Hoegsboleden in Gothenburg in a special form of functional (performance) contract. The main requirements are that after one year the noise reduction compared with the old pavement should be at least 6dB(A) and that the rutting after five years should not be more than 18mm.
