TransPennine builds on success

TransPennine Express (TPE) has experienced a 15% increase in journeys and 24% revenue growth over 3 years along with improvements in train punctuality and customer satisfaction. The role of Managing Director Vernon Barker in TPE's success is discussed. When travelling on TPE trains, he spends individual thirds of the journey with the driver, conductor and passengers. His approach to financial management is outlined. In 2008, TPE takes over the Manchester-Scotland services and will seek to provide additional capacity as passenger numbers continue to grow. The takeover will mean a reduction in the number of through trains between Manchester Airport and the Lake District as TPE diverts trains to the Scottish route. Vernon Barker credits the success of TPE to the team within TPE and also to Network Rail, Northern who maintain the Class 158s and Siemens for the new train fleet. He sees his next challenge as winning over the next generation of business people as passengers and to run the railway.
