A STEP in the right direction: motivating secondary students to take action and get active
Car-dependent youth become car-dependent adults. Secondary school students are rarely challenged to consider the personal and community impacts of their transportation choices. Secondary schools and elementary schools face similar transportation challenges but little action has been taken for secondary schools. We found that far more emphasis is placed on preparing these students to become future drivers while little or no emphasis has been placed on discussions of alternative transportation choices and the consequences of a car dominated society. The Green Communities STEP pilot set out to explore and test strategies to reach out to secondary school students. The STEP pilot examined the challenges, barriers and attitudes towards vehicle use at the secondary school level, in particular as it relates to the commute to school.
