Launching Luxury on the Line to Tibet
This article describes the railway that runs from Beijing in China to Lhasa in Tibet, known especially as being the world’s highest rail line in terms of altitude. The organization that operates the line, Tangula Railtours, negotiated plans with the Chinese government first and then proceeded through a number of business negotiations to finance and operate the leisure railway. In an effort to accommodate tourist requests, trips from Beijing to Lhasa take five days. On-board hospitality services have been outsourced to a Chinese luxury hotel operator. The trainsets used are described. Four different cars are employed, including suite cars, kitchen cars, scenic cars, and power-generating cars. Because of the altitude, an enriched oxygen environment is provided for passengers.
