State DOT Rankings: The Top Five
In this article the top five ranked State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) are outlined in terms of the merits regarding well-lit roadways. The authors note that this is in an effort to improve lighting conditions on highways across the U.S. The top DOT for highway illumination is the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). It was ranked so due to its emphasis on cost efficiency, environmental concerns, and manifest lighting levels. The state’s lighting philosophy takes into account social, economic, and environmental factors in addition to specific technical issues. The second place DOT is New Mexico, which, like California, also uses roadway lighting fixtures that are full cut-off. New Mexico also has a clear outdoor lighting policy in their standards. Coming in third, fourth, and fifth are the DOTs in Texas, Colorado, and Arizona, respectively.
