LONGITUDINAL STIFFNESS OF MAIN THRUST BEARING FOUNDATIONS

The difficulty of establishing an accurate spring-mass system with which longitudinal vibration characteristics of a ship may be estimated is generally complicated by the need to accurately calculate or estimate the required masses and stiffnesses. The stiffness of the thrust-bearing foundation is no exception; the wide variation in foundation arrangements and the continuity of the thrust bearing and machinery foundations with the ships' innerbottom combine to make this perhaps the most difficult stiffness to calculate. Thus, it is the intent of the following discussion and example to help provide some guidance in making the proper assumptions and calculations required to calculate the stiffness of the thrust-bearing foundation. It should be noted that this stiffness does not deal with the thrust bearing and its housing, but only with the foundation to the point where it bolts to the thrust-bearing housing.
