BUSWAYS AND RELATED HIGH OCCUPANCY VEHICLE FACILITIES AND PROGRAMS
Section 149.2 of the California Streets and Highways Code directs the Department of Transportation to submit annual progress reports summarizing programs it has undertaken for the development of exclusive buseways. The results of preferential lane projects established since the last report to the Legislature have been variable. On Route 101 in Marin County north of San Francisco and on the San Bernardino Freeway in Los Angeles existing exclusive busways were opened to carpools and the results have been perceived by the public and by Caltrans as good. On the Santa Monica Freeway Diamond Lane pilot project in which existing lanes were reserved for exclusive use by buses and carpools, the project received strong public and media opposition after it opened although there was a significant increase in bus riding and carpooling.
