Home sweet home
Increasing traffic levels in the UK are resulting in congestion and air pollution and contributing to climate change. The UK is moving towards a service based economy and organisations are becoming more flexible towards employment conditions. The daily commute accounts for almost 30% of traffic on UK roads, with 70% of commuting being undertaken by car. The shift from working in the office to working at home is not as simple as it appears. Individual and organisational resistances to home working are identified. These include concerns about loss of social interaction, threats to career progression, problems with managerial control, not all jobs being suitable for homeworking and difficulties with the home environment. Combining these resistances resulted in a figure of 27% of staff that might convert to home working. The ability of this subset to reduce traffic levels on the roads is considered.
