Internet traffic
The On-Line Motorway Traffic Viewer has been developed for the UK Highways Agency (HA) by TRL to provide traffic information. It has a web application with live and historical traffic information from two of the most prominent stretches of UK motorway (Junctions 16-10 on the anti-clockwise carriageway of the M25 (MIDAS Controlled Motorways, CM) and the pilot Active Traffic Management (ATM) section of the M42, Junctions 3a-7). By studying live and historical traffic and signal settings, the traffic analyst can identify any sources of congestion and possible reasons for their occurrence. Before the system was available, the operation of intelligent transport system control systems was reviewed manually and retrospectively. TRL is also developing an Expert System within the On-Line Motorway Traffic Viewer that automatically highlights potential faults and alerts staff to relevant information. The Expert System will detect unprotected queues and abnormal conditions on the motorway.
