The current situation in the Republic of Congo

The road network of the Republic of Congo consists of 18000 km of roads, of which 6551 km of priority roads have been included in the National Transport Plan. Government reforms were initiated in 1998 following armed conflict in 1997-1998 that resulted in a dilapidated road network. The reform process included privatisation of road maintenance. The main divisions of the Ministry of Construction and Public Works are explained. In 2004, a series of legislative and administrative measures were enacted to ensure the long-term availability of resources for road maintenance. The National Transport Plan set forth the investment priorities for the road sector to stimulate the national economy, to enhance accessibility to social services and employment, and to promote exchanges and restore the role of transit. The results from the reforms introduced in the transportation sector are outlined.
