Future-proof: Upton upon Severn viaduct, UK
The new Upton upon Severn viaduct which cares the A4104 highway over the River Severn floodplain in Worcestershire, UK is designed to be jacked up in the future to clear flood waters. The viaduct replaces a reinforced concrete viaduct that had suffered severe structural decay due to poor design and ingress of de-icing salts. Construction of a new higher bridge would have required land requisition for the bridge approaches, but the urgency of the replacement meant that there would not have been sufficient time for the necessary statutory procedures. A viaduct consisting of several long spans was considered the only feasible solution. A steel and concrete composite construction with a filler beam deck was selected. Details are given of the ground and substructures, the deck design and construction, the supports, steelwork, bracing, steel reinforcements, parapets and concreting. The composite filler beam concept allowed rapid construction with minimum temporary support from the ground. The slender, monolithic deck offered minimal impedance to flood flows.
