FATIGUE CRACK PROPAGATION IN STEELS
Fatigue crack propagation rates were measured in a number of steels heat treated to give a wide range of strength and toughness levels. Several thicknesses and geometries of test pieces were tested including 1/8 in. thick center-cracked sheet tension, 1/2 in. thick compact tension, 1 in. thick compact tension and 1 in. thick wedge-open-loaded (WOL) test pieces; no significant differences were observed in the data from the different specimens. Little difference was observed in the crack propagation behavior of steels with martensitic and bainitic microstructures tested in either longitudinal or transverse directions. Steels tempered at 200 C tended to have a slightly higher rate of crack propagation.
