A TECHNIQUE FOR MONITORING CRACK EXTENSION DURING CRACK OPENING DISPLACEMENT MEASUREMENT
A D.C. electrical resistance crack monitoring technique has been developed to enable the detection of the crack extension processes which occur during the measurement of crack opening displacement in steels. The approach is able to distinguish between stretch zone formation, which occurs early in the loading process, and fibrous extension which follows it. Results are presented for two low-strength carbon-manganese steels in which the crack extension which accompanies COD measurement over a range of temperatures has been monitored by the electrical resistance technique and confirmed by subsequent fractographic examination.
