ANTISLIME COATINGS. PART II--PRECONDITIONING VALUE OF SLIME FOR BARNACLE ATTACHMENT

Investigations of the relationship between barnacle attachment and the presence of a primary slime film on submerged surfaces has been completed. Using laboratory-reared barnacle cyprids in a statistical settlement survey, it has been determined that the number of barnacle cyprids settling on a slimed surface consistently exceeds by a factor of ten the number that settle on a cleaned control surface. Data describing the slime factor as a naturally occuring surface-preconditioning agent affecting the settlement of other sessile organisms are evaluated.
