A NEW TECHNIQUE FOR INCREASING THE RESISTANCE OF CONCRETE TO FROST-DEICING SALT
EIN NEUES VERFAHREN ZUR ERZIELUNG DER FROST-TAUSALZBESTAENDIGKEIT DES BETONS, UNTERSUCHUNGSBERICHT B 363
Concrete resistance to frost-deicing salt can be reliably achieved by the introduction of artificial air voids. In air entrained concrete, the air content of the fresh concrete must be constantly checked during the construction process, and this is not possible in the case of very stiff concrete for precast concrete or cast stone. For this reason, an attempt was made to mix in directly in the form of "packaged" air the expansion space necessary for frost-deicing salt resistance of concrete. Polyurethene flour of various particle sizes and micro-hollow balls from various suppliers were added to the concrete and the resulting specimens were tested for frost-deicing salt resistance. It was demonstrated that the polyurethene-foam flour, even in large quantities, is not suitable as an alternative to the normal air entraining technique. On the other hand, the use of micro-hollow balls in frost-deicing salt resistant concrete for pavements, is simpler to produce and requires less intensive surveillance than methods employed hitherto. As the air entrainment meter cannot be used, a special testing technique was developed. The cost of micro-hollow ball concrete is, at present, still higher than that of the normal air entrained concrete. /TRRL/
