PennDOT's Geographic Information System
At the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), new technological tools are continually being developed and implemented to meet a wide range of transportation requirements. As PennDOT is discovering, the potential applications for a Geographic Information System (GIS) are far-reaching. GIS is adding greater efficiency to existing operations, improving decision-support, and allowing managers to view things from a geographic perspective not realized in the past. The purpose of this document is to provide PennDOT system developers, outside agencies, and consultants with a detailed summary of the Department’s GIS. This summary traces the history and technical development of GIS at PennDOT. Technical information is provided for those desiring to use, interface, or connect to the Department’s GIS.
