Sweeping Safely and Efficiently
Construction site sweepers and sweeping requirements and techniques are discussed in this article. Dirt track-out by vehicles from construction sites is one of the leading causes of pollution. While no specific techniques are stipulated by federal environmental rules, a plan must be in place. Many states have more stringent rules. Transverse broom and air sweepers are the most common types. Techniques agreed upon by the North American Power Sweeping Association are described. Considerations listed include: debris-dumping locations need to be appropriate for the material; proper safety equipment, such as flashing lights and other warnings, is important; prior planning and frequent, thorough sweeping are important; and, use metered water, not from a fire hydrant. Other issues concern wages, worker compensation, and business functions.
