Road Safety in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Neglected Research Area
Since most of the fatalities from road traffic crashes occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), identification and implementation of effective preventive interventions are essential. This article reports on a study examining 13 systematic reviews that assess interventions for reducing road traffic crashes and injuries. Findings showed that although these reviews included a total of 236 studies, only 6 (2.5%) of these trials were conducted in LMICs. This low number might reflect the lack of research capacity and funding in many LMICs. Since many of the interventions that have been examined in higher income countries are costly and possibly irrelevant in lower-income settings, more research should focus on effective interventions that specifically target road traffic crashes in LMICs.
