Truck Driver Occupational Safety and Health: 2003 Conference Report and Selective Literature Review

In 2003 the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) co-sponsored a conference that gathered together researchers from around the world to discuss the health and safety of commercial truck drivers. This report summarizes the conference presentations, presents a selective review of the relevant literature, includes comments made by many of the conference participants, and points the way to topics that need additional research. Topics covered, as listed in the table of contents, include: Introduction to Trucking - Operations, Labor Markets, and Occupational Safety and Health; Epidemiology, Surveillance, and Measurement; Ergonomics, Job Injuries, and Exposure; Labor Market, Employment Relations, and Personnel Management; Fatigue and Truck Driver Safety and Health; Causes of Driver Fatigue and Sleep Deprivation; Health Consequences of Driver Work Schedules; Health Consequences of Job Stress; Social and Behavioral Consequences of Employment as a Truck Driver; and Developing a Research Agenda on Truck Driver Occupational Safety and Health.
