Durability of Marine Concrete Structures-Field Investigations and Modelling

The authors discuss an investigation series into six concrete structures in The Netherlands, along the North Sea coast. Most were made with blast furnace slag cement, all were between 18 and 41 years of age. Visual inspections showed that only one structure showed relatively low cover depth-related corrosion damage. Within the tested areas, which were relatively small, considerable chloride ingress with a large scatter was shown in all structures, with a DuraCrete chloride ingress model interpretation basis. Apparent diffusion coefficients and chloride surface contents were produced by chloride profile curve fitting. Previously published electrical resistivity and chloride ingress of similar concretes data was used for comparison. For the chloride surface content, all concrete up 7 m above mean sea level was found to have single mean value and standard deviation application. Chloride surface content reduction or increase was decisively influenced by the local microclimate when above 7 m. Apparent chloride diffusion coefficients were not dependent on above sea level height. A single exponential aging coefficient value expressed their age dependency. Simplified environmental factor adoption was taken from literature. A probabilistic corrosion initiation model was proposed, for, in a marine environment, blast furnace slag cement concrete: the DuraCrete model's DuMaCon version. New structures design and existing structures assessment application is explained. The nature and influence of chloride ingress spatial variation, effect of drying out in marine splash zone chloride transport, corrosion initiation target failure probability, and critical chloride content are issues for further research.
