Prediction-Based Routing for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks
In this paper the authors present a prediction-based routing (PBR) protocol that is designed to anticipate automotive behavior on highways as part of an effort to provide a more fully integrated wireless network. While currently wireless networks are divided into short-range wireless LAN (WLAN) and long-range wireless WAN (WWAN), efforts are being made to integrate the two systems to provide better technology for intelligent transportation systems (ITS) like inter-vehicular communications and ad hoc networks. A major problem is that route length is highly variable and so routed packets between vehicles can be lost. The PBR here attempts to anticipate route lifetimes and so allow for better management of the network by preemptively creating a new path if another is in jeopardy. Researchers found that their method substantially improved packet delivery within the ad hoc network.
