High-Intensity Contact Opening Under 36-V DC Voltage Application for Mild Hybrid Vehicles

As voltage demands increase with increasing reliance on electrical power in hybrid vehicles (HEV), new problems arise in opening and closing circuits with a great deal of current running through them. This paper examines contact opening in a high-voltage circuit, namely a 36 V rather than 12 or 14 V, with a number of parameters being accounted for, including opening velocity, current intensity in the close contact, the amount of inductance in the circuit, and how the contact materials react to such high voltage situations. The specific parameters that are analyzed include electric arc duration, arc energy, electrode gap value, contact voltage maximal value, and electrode erosion. Two different materials are tested using these parameters for the electrical contact openings and results are provided and discussed.
