PILOT DECISION MAKING WHILE MANEUVERING SHIPS IN CONFINED WATERS
The Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies is working under contract with the United States Coast Guard in an attempt to understand the information processing behavior of ship pilots while conning ocean vessels in confined waterways and harbors of the United States. The objectives of the research are to identify the information used by the pilot, its source and the manner in which the pilot processes the information in making command decisions. This paper briefly summarizes the first phase study activities and reports on the use of the verbal protocol as a technique for studying pilot information processing behavior.
