Single vehicle crashes on curves: a New Zealand perspective

This paper aims to alert crash investigators to some of the basic methods to identify intentional drifting in curve crashes and to advise traffic engineers and researchers on an emerging trend amongst single vehicle crashes, which left unnoticed, may affect statistical data on curve crashes. It has three objectives that relate specifically to single vehicle serious crashes that occur on curves: 1. Investigating roadside furniture as it relates to single vehicle crashes on curves by examining the extent that different roadside furniture and other features affect single vehicles when they leave the road on curves; 2. The benefits of investigating single vehicle crashes on curves even when the driver is deceased; 3. Identifying an emerging group of road users, whose attitudes to driving around curves will affect the methodology used by crash investigators and possibly create a new category for researchers when considering causative factors.
