Feasibility of using reclaimed materials in road construction activities

VicRoads has prioritised the maximisation of the level of recycled products used during road maintenance and construction and the minimisation of the level of waste going to landfill. This has resulted in the need for investigation into ways to increase the levels of recycled or reclaimed content used in road construction and to identify opportunities for the use of low level contaminated soil in permanent structures, in ways that will not lead to impacts on human health or the environment. VicRoads’ approach to reducing resource consumption and waste generation is based on the waste hierarchy of "avoid, reuse, recycle, recover, treat, contain and dispose". A summary of the materials investigated and the outcomes of the investigations are identified in brief in the sections below and reported in more detail in the specific chapters throughout this report. This report should be read in conjunction with the conclusion and recommendations and limitations section of the report. (a)
