Regional Advanced Traveller Information System

This document summarizes the work done in developing a concept of operations for a regional Advanced Traveller Information System (ATIS) for Greater Vancouver. The objective was to design a one-stop portal that provides multi-modal, multi-jurisdiction, real-time and static traveller information through the World Wide Web and other means of dissemination. The concept of operations for the regional ATIS was developed by identifying existing and future prospective information resources from member agencies (as well as other stakeholders) and integrating them to define a unified traveller service within the region. The design, which took into consideration institutional issues, technology, operation, and maintenance, also includes the definition and outline of the ATIS service. In addition to providing a functional concept, the ATIS design offers a cost effective and constructible solution for project execution and for system implementation at present, as well as a feasible integration path for future project phases that will come on line as new components are implemented. The design is in accordance with the ITS Architecture for Canada and incorporates the latest evolving ITS standards for data exchange to support integration with other ITS centres publishing traveller information. The web portal architecture is designed to adhere to the guidelines developed for presentation of ITS information and web accessibility. The first phase implementation demonstrates the feasibility of the ATIS design and provides an opportunity for other jurisdictions to learn about the regional application of advanced traveller information.
