Trenchless- Surely Its Time is Nigh?
This article presents a survey of trenchless technology and the barriers to its successful deployment, notably in the developing world, and instances where it has been deployed effectively. In the developed world, aging infrastructure and limited space make trenchless tunneling attractive. However, technology transfer barriers and laws and regulations written to favor more traditional techniques can impede its growth. As developing countries become wealthier and can afford more investments in infrastructure and as education levels rise, there is greater demand for sustainable techniques, which favors trenchless because of its lower impact on the immediate environment in terms of emissions, truck traffic and the like. International aid policies can help encourage expanding the pool of engineers practiced in the technique. But many barriers still exist. Examples of different approaches are given.
