Big Part of Life: Several New Projects Highlight FHWA Program Under SAFETEA-LU
This article describes measures that are being taken by the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) to reduce congestion. As 10 percent of the nation’s congestion is due to construction and roadwork, the program’s aim is to achieve long-lasting and fast construction of highways and to spur innovations that will cut building and repair time. The program is funded through SAFETEA-LU, and provides grants to states to try new ways to speed up construction. The author discusses the use of prefabricated materials in projects in Florida and New York City. Other states have used a variety of road-closure strategies, including Washington, Indiana and Minnesota.
