No Break for Power Brokers
This article surveys the state of the locomotive building and repair sector of the railroad industry. The past few years have seen strong demand for power units, and 2007-2008, while perhaps not as strong as previous years because of falloff in housing and automotive sectors is still expected to be healthy. Figures are given for the major locomotive manufacturers and smaller specialty firms. Developments include higher fuel efficiency, more versatile units and hybrid fuel units. One unit transforms energy generated during braking to power in the unit. Battery improvements and cleaner burning power plants are also elements in the newer locomotives. International buyers are also showing stronger interest.
