Application of Flywheel Energy Storage Mechanism for Complete Usage of Back-Fed Brake Energy on DC Light Rail Transit Networks

The author discusses rosseta Technik GmbH's new flywheel energy storage mechanism, which is already operating on Germany's Dessau and Zwickau light rail transit (LRT) networks. The rosseta system is unique in that it allows back-fed brake energy to be completely used on DC LRT networks, with large anticipated energy saving capabilities. The author examines the mechanism, including the complete energy storage plant, and the installed systems on the Dessau and Zwickau networks, including trial operation results.
