A Reflection of Motorization and Public Transport in Jakarta Metropolitan Area

This article presents an overview of the influences of motorization trends and public transit performance on the travel patterns of urban residents in the Jakarta Metropolitan Area (JMA) in Indonesia. Using data from the last ten years, the article examines vehicle ownership, daily trips and trip length, modal choice, and traffic flows. Also included is a discussion of the implementation of a bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Indonesia in 2004 and its influence on reducing the usage of private cars. The article concludes with a discussion looking at the present transportation conditions and problems in Indonesia and possible implications for the future.
