Microstructure Characterization for Modeling HMA Behaviour Using Imaging Technology
This paper presents a summary of recent developments in imaging technology and its applications to the characterization of hot mix asphalt (HMA) microstructure. Included are discussions on : aggregate orientation distribution, aggregate contact, aggregate shape properties, air void distribution, permeability, crack distribution, three-dimensional microstructure reconstruction, and microstructure evolution. The paper also includes a discussion regarding incorporating the microstructure into the continuum modeling of HMA through microstructure measures that are known to influence the response of the materials.
