In addition to creating a substantial network of roadways to connect various population centers on that continent, the Asian Highway Network also aims to greatly improve safety, as nearly half a million persons are killed annually on roads in Asia. A high level of financial cooperation is promoting improvement and progress, however, with countries like Thailand, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Uzbekistan, China, Bangladesh, and India all contributing to respective foreign projects where their financial interests are best served.
