Across Asia: The Ambitious Asian Highway Network is Taking Shape
In this article the author describes the development of the Asian Highway Network as endorsed and set in motion by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), a branch of the United Nations (UN). In addition to creating a substantial network of roadways to connect various population centers on that continent, the Asian Highway Network also aims to greatly improve safety, as nearly half a million persons are killed annually on roads in Asia. While the network is making progress, it has yet to improve on 143,000 miles of substandard roadway, which accounts for about 17 percent of the total mileage. A high level of financial cooperation is promoting improvement and progress, however, with countries like Thailand, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Uzbekistan, China, Bangladesh, and India all contributing to respective foreign projects where their financial interests are best served. Even the typically uncooperative North Korea intends of participation in the Asian Highway Network.
