CONTROL OF LNG SPILL FIRES WITH HIGH EXPANSION FOAMS
Discusses the results of an experimental program conducted to verify and evaluate the reported quantitative control characteristics of high expansion foams on LNG spill fires. The authors present conclusions regarding the effects of foam application rates and expansion ratios on the control characteristics. Although chances for spillage and subsequent ignition of large quantities of LNG are remote, it has been decided in many instances to consider large LNG spills for safety reasons. To alleviate a large LNG fire's severe radiant heating effects on its surroundings, it is necessary to provide extensive exposure control methods (such as water spray curtains or direct contact water spray systems) or to provide for direct control of the LNG fire so that high radiant heat fluxes are confined to the immediate fire zone.
